History
The Department of Economics and International Business was established in 1993 on the basis of the departments of Economic Geography and Sectoral Economics (1978–1989) and Economics and Planning of Industries and Territories (1989–1993). In 2011, it merged with the Department of Economic Theory.
Students
Students study under the offered academic programs. Among them are holders of state grants, recipients of the “Altyn Belgi” award, students from various regions of Kazakhstan, and international students from Germany, Uzbekistan, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.

The graduate employment rate is 95%.

A Dissertation Council operates at the Department for the defense of doctoral dissertations (PhD) under the educational program 8D04101 – Economics.
Research Activity
The Department of Economics and International Business plays a key role in the development of scientific research and educational activities aimed at in-depth study of various aspects of economics and international business. The main areas of work of the department cover the study of the institutional foundations of ensuring the competitiveness of the economy of Kazakhstan, the analysis of socio-economic problems, the development of entrepreneurship, the study of macro- and microeconomic processes, international trade, as well as the introduction of innovative technologies and the digitalization of business processes.
The department actively cooperates with various public and private structures, developing projects aimed at supporting economic growth and modernizing the business environment. Faculty and students of the department are actively involved in creating new business models, researching international economic trends and developing solutions that can be adapted to the dynamically developing economy of Kazakhstan. In addition, the department pays special attention to the analysis of global economic changes, which helps students and scientists to better understand current trends and challenges of international business.
One of the important activities of the department is to hold scientific conferences and seminars that promote the exchange of knowledge and experience between scientists and practitioners at both national and international levels. Within the framework of these events, topical issues of economics, innovation and digital technologies are discussed, which allows to broaden the horizons of participants and contribute to the development of scientific thought.
The results of the department's scientific research are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, which confirms the high level of academic work. These publications cover a wide range of topics, from theoretical research in the field of international business to practical solutions for improving the competitiveness of Kazakhstani enterprises. Students are actively involved in scientific research, participate in projects and present their work at regional and international conferences, which allows them to develop their professional skills and build successful careers in the future.
One of the key aspects of the activity is the systematic invitation of foreign lecturers. Experts from various countries conduct lectures and workshops, sharing their experiences and discussing current issues of the global economy and business. This allows students and teachers of the department to get acquainted with international practices and approaches, which contributes to a deeper understanding of global processes and integration into the global economic space. International cooperation significantly strengthens the department's educational programs, allowing it to train highly qualified specialists.
Thus, the Department of Economics and International Business not only actively promotes the development of scientific thought and innovation, but also plays an important role in training highly qualified specialists who are able to work effectively in the global economy and digital business transformation.
Academic Mobility
The Department actively implements internal and external academic mobility programs.
From 2024 to the present, 39 students and Master’s students participated in exchanges with leading universities in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine.
Students from Tambov State Technical University, Odesa State University of Intellectual Technologies and Communications, and Fergana State Technical University study at the Department.
Currently, 20 students and Master’s students are enrolled under mobility programs.
