Detailed information about the professor t.g. mustafin department of modern and classical mathematics
History:
The Professor T. G. Mustafin Department of Modern and Classical Mathematics was established in 2026 through the merger of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations and the Professor T. G. Mustafin Department of Algebra, Mathematical Logic andт Geometry. Its history, however, reaches much further back: its principal academic and research traditions began to take shape in Karaganda in the 1960s and developed systematically after the establishment of Karaganda State University in 1972. The new department is the direct successor to four of the five original departments of the Faculty of Mathematics: Mathematical Analysis, Differential and Integral Equations, Higher Algebra, and Higher Geometry.
The history of the Department of Mathematical Analysis dates back to the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Karaganda Pedagogical Institute. Following the establishment of Karaganda State University in 1972, the department became part of the new Faculty of Mathematics; its first head at the university was M. A. Perevertun, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Associate Professor. One of the main tasks in the early years was to build a highly qualified academic and research staff. Important milestones included the opening of postgraduate studies in Mathematical Analysis in 1983, a master’s program in 1999, and a doctoral program in 2001. In the 1990s, E. S. Smailov, N. A. Bokaev, E. D. Nursultanov, and L. K. Kusainova defended their doctoral dissertations; under the supervision of the department’s leading scholars, more than twenty researchers were trained to the Candidate of Sciences level. By the late 1990s, a research school in function theory and functional analysis had taken shape in Karaganda, and in 2000 a dissertation council in Mathematical Analysis was established at KarSU.
The Department of Differential and Integral Equations was established when KarSU was founded in 1972; its first head was A. I. Iglikov. The department taught differential and integral equations, mathematical physics, and mathematical modeling. Its research covered ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, oscillation theory, and boundary-value problems in mathematical physics. A sustained research program emerged from the work of M. I. Ramazanov and his students on loaded differential equations, heat-conduction problems, integral equations, and nonclassical problems of mathematical physics. In 2006, the Departments of Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations were merged, while the principal research areas of both schools were preserved.
The algebraic and logical line has an even earlier institutional history: an independent Department of Higher Algebra was established at the Karaganda Pedagogical Institute in 1967. After KarSU was founded in 1972, the department was headed by Tolendy Garifovich Mustafin, who became the central figure in the development of the Karaganda school of mathematical logic and model theory. Following the research tradition of Academician A. D. Taimanov, work focused on stable theories, structural properties of algebraic systems, stability classification, and Jonsson theories. International scholarly links also played an important role: in 1990, KarSU hosted a Soviet-French colloquium on model theory attended by more than 80 scholars, and cooperation with French mathematicians continued through research visits and joint colloquia.
A Department of Higher Geometry was also established in 1972. In 1997, the Departments of Higher Algebra and Geometry and Topology were merged to form the Department of Algebra, Mathematical Logic and Geometry, preserving both the algebraic-logical and geometric traditions. One of T. G. Mustafin’s best-known students, A. R. Yeshkeyev, defended his doctoral dissertation in 2010 and headed the department from 2013 to 2021. In 2014, mechanics was incorporated into the department, expanding research in construction mechanics, the theory of elasticity and plasticity, and soil and foundation mechanics; from 2021 onward, the department also developed the educational field of Robotics and Mechatronics. The 2026 merger brought together within a single department the research traditions that had shaped fundamental mathematics education at the university for decades. Today, the department integrates research in function theory and functional analysis, differential and integral equations, mathematical physics, algebra, mathematical logic, model theory, and geometry. Retaining Professor T. G. Mustafin’s name in the department’s title underscores continuity with one of the university’s most prominent research schools, while the new department also carries forward the achievements of all its predecessor departments. The year 2026 should therefore be viewed not as the beginning of its history, but as a new organizational stage in more than half a century of the development of fundamental mathematics at Karaganda University.
