Foundation
Karaganda Teachers Institute
The first academic year welcomed 117 students in history, Kazakh language and literature, and Russian language and literature. Among the first teachers were historians and philologists released from Karlag.

Pedagogical Institute
The teachers institute was transformed into Karaganda Pedagogical Institute. It had 8 departments, 82 teachers, one doctor of sciences and 16 candidates of sciences. The first graduating class included 318 specialists.

Birth of the university
Karaganda State University
In March 1972, Karaganda State University was officially opened. Its first rector was Evney Arstanovich Buketov, a scientist, poet, author of more than 200 scientific works and 90 inventions.

Academician’s name
Named after Evney Arstanovich Buketov
The university was named after its founder and first rector, an outstanding scientist, engineer, poet and thinker. In 2007, a monument to Academician Buketov was installed on campus.

Magna Charta Universitatum
The university became one of the first universities in Kazakhstan to sign the Magna Charta Universitatum in Bologna. The ISO 9001 quality management system was introduced and a college was opened.

QS World University Rankings
The university entered QS World University Rankings for the first time, taking 601st place. The Electronic University project was launched. In 2012, it first entered Webometrics.

Discovery of the year
The Kazakhstan Pyramid
University archaeologists discovered a unique pre-Saka burial complex known as the Kazakhstan Pyramid. The discovery resonated strongly in the international scientific community.

Science and innovation
EXPO-2017 and Springer recognition
Scientists of the Faculty of Chemistry produced an experimental biofuel sample and presented 5 projects at EXPO-2017. The university was recognized by Springer Nature as a popular scientific organization in Kazakhstan.
Rebranding
Karaganda Buketov University
The university began rebranding as Karaganda Buketov University and officially registered its new logo. The Bulletin of KarU, Chemistry Series was included in Scopus.
