History

The history of the Faculty of Philology dates back to May 9, 1938, when the Karaganda Teachers’ Institute was established in accordance with Resolution No. 454/12 of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR and the Kazakh SSR, based on the Faculty of History and Philology.

The Faculty trains qualified teachers of the Kazakh language and literature, Kazakh and English languages, Russian language and literature, as well as philologists, journalists, and press secretaries engaged in teaching, research, and literary and publicistic activities.

Faculty Structure

The Faculty comprises five departments and one research institute:

Department of Kazakh Linguistics;

Department of Kazakh Literature;

Department of Practical Kazakh Language;

Department of Russian Language and Literature named after Professor G. A. Meyramov;

Department of Journalism;

Institute for the Study of the Spiritual Heritage of the Kazakh People.

The Department of Journalism operates Educational Television and Buketov Radio.

Academic Staff

Currently, the Faculty of Philology employs 81 faculty members, including 10 Doctors of Sciences, 4 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), 29 Candidates of Sciences, and more than 40 Master’s degree holders.

The academic staff includes 12 recipients of the “Best University Teacher” award, winners of nationally funded research project competitions, Honored Workers of Science and Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the University, scholars who have made a significant contribution to the development of Kazakhstani science, as well as members of the Writers’ Union and the Journalists’ Union of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Students

The total number of students is approximately 1,480, of whom more than 1,000 study under state-funded educational grants. Each year, 350–400 students are admitted to the Faculty.

The student body includes international students from Mongolia, Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan. Within the framework of academic mobility programs, Faculty students participate in exchange programs with universities in Kazakhstan and neighboring countries.

Graduate Employment

Graduates of the Faculty are highly competitive in the labor market. The graduate employment rate is 80–85%.

To implement research projects and train highly qualified specialists, the Faculty actively cooperates with research centers and universities in near and far abroad, including institutions in Russia (notably the Republics of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan), Uzbekistan, China, Poland, Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary.
