History

The Faculty of Foreign Languages rightfully occupies one of the leading positions in the foreign language education system of the region and the country. Its history began in 1991, when a foreign languages department was opened at the Faculty of Philology. The first enrolment was for the German language programme, with 20 students. Already in the 1990s, with the rapid growth in public and professional demand for specialists with knowledge of foreign languages, there was a need to expand training. This became the basis for the transformation of the department into an independent Faculty of Foreign Languages in 1994. The first dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages was Doctor of Philology, Professor N.I. Buketova, who laid the foundation for the faculty's academic traditions. A significant contribution to the establishment and sustainable development of the faculty was made by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor B.A. Zhetpisbayeva, who headed the faculty from 1998 to 2019. Under her leadership, the faculty strengthened its position as an educational and scientific centre, built a strong reputation, and became a platform for training competitive specialists. From 2019 to 2025, the faculty was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor G.K. Tleuzhanova, who continued to strengthen academic traditions, develop scientific potential and expand international cooperation within the faculty. The faculty was founded by outstanding teachers and scholars: Associate Professor V.O. Ten, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Professor F.A. Kakhzhanova, Senior Lecturers B.Zh. Zhankina, Zh.A. Kagazbayev, L.A. Turumbetova, R.Zh. Dzhangunakova, I.V. Rosokha. Over the years, the faculty departments were headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor F.A. This small but close-knit team successfully overcame organisational difficulties and laid the foundations for a promising and dynamically developing faculty. Teaching staff: The educational process is supported by highly qualified teaching staff who have undergone professional training as part of the «Bolashak» programme and academic exchanges in countries where the languages studied are spoken. The faculty employs doctors of science and doctors (PhDs), candidates of science, and masters, including eight holders of the republican title «Best University Teacher», which attests to the recognition of the scientific and methodological level of teaching at the national level. The main tradition of the faculty is the constant involvement of foreign teachers and lecturers from the USA, Germany, France, China, Turkey and other countries. Students: In recent years, the contingent of students has been more than 1000 people, including the "Altyn Belgi" owners and holders of an educational grant. Along with students from various regions of Kazakhstan, foreign students from China, Russia, and Uzbekistan study at the faculty. There is an annual growth in the contingent of students, as well as an indicator of the demand for graduates in the labor market. More than 70% of graduates find work easily in the first three months after graduation. Educational programmes: The faculty's first graduation took place in 1996, with 63 graduates in «German» and «English». The faculty has since steadily developed its range of educational programmes, responding in a timely manner to the demands of the education system, science and international communication. As the faculty developed, new areas of training were opened and a multi-level education model was introduced: 1991 – German 1992 – English 1996 – French 1999 – Foreign Philology (English and German Philology) 2001 – French Philology 2001 – Translation Studies 2012 – Chinese Philology. Since 2006, the faculty has been offering master's degrees in the following specialisations: 2006 – Foreign Language: Two Foreign Languages 2009 – Foreign Philology 2024 – Translation and SMART Technologies in Linguistics In 2014, a doctoral programme was launched in Foreign Language: Two Foreign Languages, which was an important step in the development of the faculty's scientific school and the strengthening of the university's research potential. Currently, the faculty implements modern educational programmes focused on the requirements of the international academic and professional environment. Cooperation agreements have been signed with universities in neighbouring and distant foreign countries. Today, undergraduate and master's students study at leading universities in the United States, Germany, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, China, and Russia as part of academic mobility programmes. They participate in exchange programmes and internships, developing a high level of linguistic, professional, and intercultural competence. Dissertation Council: The Faculty of Foreign Languages has a high scientific status and a long tradition of training scientific and teaching staff. An important confirmation of this is the functioning of the dissertation council for the educational programme «Foreign Language: Two Foreign Languages», which ensures the development of the faculty's scientific school and the training of competitive specialists with the highest qualifications. Accreditation and Leadership: The faculty's programs are accredited by the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education. They occupy high positions in the national rankings of universities: three undergraduate programs: «Translation Studies», «Russian for Foreign Students», «Foreign Philology»; two Master's Programs «Foreign language: two foreign languages», «Foreign philology» were included in the top three according to the version of the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education; two programs are highly rated in the rating of employers «Atameken»: «Foreign language: two foreign languages», «Foreign philology». Projects: The faculty actively develops scientific and research activities, combining academic traditions and modern trends in linguistics, intercultural communication and educational innovations. The faculty's scientific work is based on the principles of continuity of scientific schools, systematic research and practice-oriented results, which ensures the sustainable development of scientific potential and the growth of a research culture among students and teachers. Of particular importance for the establishment and strengthening of scientific authority is the successful experience of leading grant projects of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as university grant projects carried out by leading scientists of the faculty. Renowned scientists of the faculty have made a significant contribution to the development of research traditions: Professor Zhetpisbayeva B.A., Professor Isina G.I., Professor Buketova N.I., Professor Tleuzhanova G.K., Professor F.A. Kakzhanova, under whose leadership scientific initiatives aimed at modernising foreign language and philological education, introducing modern pedagogical technologies and developing scientific and methodological support for the training of future specialists were implemented. At the same time, the faculty demonstrates a steady trend towards renewing its scientific staff and actively supporting young researchers. Today, the scientific schools are being continued by representatives of a new generation of scientists who are leading current scientific projects and research, including Professor G.B. Sarzhanova, Associate Professor T.Yu. Shelestova, and Associate Professor G.Zh. Smagulova. Their scientific activities reflect the faculty's strategic course towards the development of an innovative educational space, the integration of digital technologies, and the expansion of interdisciplinary approaches in pedagogical science. Partners: The faculty cooperates with leading international organisations, expanding opportunities for academic exchange and joint initiatives. Partners include: DAAD, Goethe-Institut, Alliance Française, British Council, Linguistic Centre at the French Embassy in Kazakhstan, and others. Within the framework of this cooperation, guest lectures by foreign scientists, joint scientific research and academic projects are carried out. Alumni Association: Over the years, the faculty has trained more than 5,000 specialists - school teachers, university lecturers, philologists, and translators who meet the modern requirements of the labour market and educational policy of the region and the republic as a whole. Among the graduates of the faculty from different years are citizens of Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, Turkey, and Italy. Graduates of the faculty work successfully in all regions of Kazakhstan, as well as in countries near and far abroad. They work as teachers, university lecturers, translators, and international specialists, including at the embassies of the United States, Germany, and France, and at international representative offices accredited in the Republic of Kazakhstan. One of the traditions and unique values is the systematic work to maintain contact with graduates. The Association of Graduates of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, established in 2006, now has more than 1,000 members. The association operates on the principles of voluntariness and equality and aims to strengthen the professional community of the faculty, support student initiatives and enhance the prestige of graduates. The faculty not only preserves the continuity of generations, but also develops a culture of academic cooperation in which graduates are active participants in the educational trajectories of new generations of students.
