History:
The Department of Physical Chemistry was opened in 1977, the first head of which was the first rector of Karaganda State University, academician E.A. Buketov. The first department consisted of the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Omarova R.G., and students of Buketov E.A., who were invited to the university from the Chemical and Metallurgical Institute: Valikhanov N.H., Zhambekov M.I., Kozorin L.G., Egorova I.V., Novik S.N., Kalanova Sh.M. A little later, after defending their PhD thesis in In Moscow, Masalimov A.S., Nurgaliev B.Z., Zhumadilov E.K., Makarov G.V. began working at the department.
In the 80s, on the basis of the Department of Physical Chemistry, the problematic research laboratory "Chemistry and Technology of Chalcogens and Chalcogenides", the Department of Colloidal Chemistry and Ecology (Head of the Department, Professor Zhuravlev V.P.), Department of Electrochemistry (Head of the Department, Prof. Zhurinov M.Zh.), the second department of Quantum Chemistry in the Soviet Union (Head of the Department, Prof. Minaev B.F.). As
a result of optimizing the structure of higher educational institutions in Kazakhstan, the departments of physical and quantum chemistry were re-united in 1995, under the leadership of Dr. Masalimov A.S.
In 1997, the departments of Quantum, Physical and Analytical Chemistry were merged and the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry was established. During the existence of the department, Minaev B.F., Makarov G.V., Sharipov M.Sh., Masalimov A.S., Beznosyuk S.A., Irgibayeva I.S., Amerkhanova S.K., Nikolsky S.N. defended their doctoral dissertations.
